Timileyin Ajayi, accused of killing National Youth Service Corps member Salome Adaidu, has pleaded not guilty to the crime. Adaidu was found dead at his residence a few weeks ago.
Ajayi was arrested by the Nasarawa State Police on January 12 and charged with culpable homicide, which carries the death penalty.
At his court appearance on Monday before Justice Simeon Aboki in Lafia, the suspect denied the charges. Officer-in-Charge of Legal Affairs, Stanley Nwaforagu, spoke to the media, emphasizing that despite the defendant’s not guilty plea, the police would continue pursuing justice in the case.
Nwaforagu stated, “On January 27, 2025, Timileyin Ajayi was formally arraigned on a charge of culpable homicide punishable by death. He pleaded not guilty, and the case was adjourned to March 17-20 for trial. The court has committed to a swift trial, and we are confident justice will be served with the strong evidence we have.”
Ajayi’s lawyer, Joseph Tukur, confirmed the arraignment and assured that he would continue to represent his client throughout the trial. He emphasized that his role is to ensure the prosecution proves the case legally.
“It’s not my job to prove the case,” Tukur explained. “My responsibility is to defend my client and ensure the prosecution meets its burden of proof.”
