The Lagos State House of Assembly has reaffirmed that the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa as speaker was fully legal and aligned with constitutional provisions.
Obasa was removed on January 13 while abroad, with lawmakers citing gross misconduct and abuse of office as the reasons for his impeachment. Mojisola Meranda, Obasa’s deputy, was elected as the new speaker.
However, Obasa has disputed the removal, claiming he remains the speaker until proper procedures are followed.
The lawmakers referenced sections 92 and 96 of the 1999 Constitution, emphasizing that the impeachment adhered to due process.
In a statement issued after visiting the Lagos DSS office in Shangisha on Thursday, the lawmakers asserted their actions were in the best interests of the people. They had gone to the DSS office to address the detention of two colleagues, Lanre Afinni and Sylvester Ogunkelu, who were questioned regarding assembly matters.
“The Lagos State House of Assembly, as an independent arm of government, carried out its constitutional duty in the best interests of the people,” the statement read. “Any challenge to this lawful action undermines the authority granted to us by the Nigerian Constitution.”
The lawmakers also praised the DSS for its professionalism and confirmed that all detained colleagues had been released.
They reiterated their commitment to fulfilling their legislative responsibilities and urged all stakeholders, including the executive and the public, to respect the integrity of the legislative process and avoid unnecessary interference.
