The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the immediate retirement of senior police officers who have served for over 35 years or are above 60 years old. This decision followed the Commission’s 1st Extraordinary Meeting on January 31, 2025.
In its previous 24th Plenary Meeting on September 27-28, 2017, the PSC approved that force entrants’ service dates should be based on their appointment rather than enlistment dates. However, after further review, the Commission concluded that this policy conflicted with public service rules, particularly Rule No. 020908, which mandates retirement after 35 years of service or at the age of 60.
The decision was led by Commission Chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu, rtd, mni, and included the presence of Justice Adamu Paul Galumje, retired Supreme Court Justice; DIG Taiwo Lakanu, rtd, fdc; and Hon. Commissioner Chief Onyemuchi Nnamani. The decision has been communicated to the Inspector General of Police for implementation.
